Potable Water Coalition for Indigenous Peoples

Potable Water Coalition for Indigenous Peoples

What it is

Installation of potable water filters in indigenous territories, an initiative created by the Humanitas360 Institute and its sponsor, the PDR Philanthropic Fund, in partnership with Água Camelo, a socio-environmental impact startup that promotes access to treated water for people in situations of social vulnerability. The project began in 2023 in the Sete de Setembro Indigenous Land, where the Paiter Suruí people received the installation of three distribution points with large-scale filters (1,000 liters per hour) in the Lapetanha and Pabykeb villages, in Rondônia. Around 112 indigenous people were positively impacted by the filters, in addition to environmental prevention agents and visitors who pass through the sites. In 2024, the initiative gained new momentum, with distribution points installed in the Gamir and Apoena Meirelles villages, where they benefit 65 and 17 Paiter Suruí families in Rondônia and Mato Grosso, respectively.

Objectives

The coalition is a response to the serious water contamination crisis affecting several indigenous communities in Brazil, exemplified by the critical situation of the Yanomami people, but which extends to other indigenous lands affected by problems such as illegal mining, deforestation, use of pesticides, large infrastructure projects and climate change. Formed by citizens, social organizations and companies, the coalition’s main objectives are: to raise funds and create innovative solutions to provide drinking water to indigenous villages, mainly in the Legal Amazon; to promote the dissemination of the history, culture and challenges faced by indigenous peoples; and to establish dialogue with different spheres of government to implement actions aligned with its mission of guaranteeing water suitable for human consumption to the indigenous communities most in need.
