Climate justice and economic development: H360 president speaks to Estadão about industrial Hemp
In an interview on Brazilian vodcast “No Ritmo da Vida”, produced by the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo with radio Eldorado, the president of Humanitas360 Institute and advisor to Instituto Ficus, Patrícia Villela Marino, advocated for establishing a Hemp production chain in Brazil. Capable of combining economic development and combating the climate emergency, the plant – a variety of Cannabis without psychoactive properties – could include the country in a global market that already moves 5 to 7 billion dollars per year, in addition to regenerating degraded soils and sequestering greenhouse gases.
“If we unite all the potentials – medicinal, industrial and climate protection – with what I call, together with all the other components, the function of being an instrument of climate justice, we will see that Brazil is losing great potential, including economic competition with other countries that already dedicate themselves to this cultivation,” said Patrícia Villela Marino.
During the conversation with journalist Antonio Penteado Mendonça, she also highlighted the installation “Ancestral Innovation: Hemp, Sustainability and the Future of Architecture,” on display until November at the Venice Biennale of Architecture. Realized in partnership with Ficus Institute and architects Pedro Mendes da Rocha and Chico Gitahy, the work marks the 10-year celebrations of Humanitas360 Institute.
